How to Care for Your Jewels
To maintain shine, regularly use a blue polishing cloth to wipe away dirt, dust, sweat, body oils, chemicals etc.
Avoid exposing your jewellery to skin care products, soaps, detergents, household cleaning products, hair products, make up and perfumes. These acidic and harsh ingredients may affect the wear of your jewellery over time.
We recommend removing your jewellery before doing high impact physical exercise and also entering salt or chlorinated water. We do not recommend wearing gemstones or freshwater pearls in water as they may discolour, loosen and fall out over time.
Store your jewellery in your Gorgeous Girl pouch or box to avoid moisture and metal on metal rubbing. Make sure your pieces are dry before storing.
Your body chemistry can also play in how fast your jewellery becomes tarnished. Factors that can affect this are your skin pH, how much you sweat, what you eat, what medicine you take, how much you drink, etc. Generally, if you are having a reaction to metals or experiencing more jewellery wear out of nowhere, this may be due to a change to your body chemistry.
Lastly, the environment you are in also affects the wear of your jewellery. Acidity in the air, pollution and humidity are major factors in jewellery tarnish. To reduce the effects of environmental wear on your gold filled or gold plated piece, we recommend to clean the jewellery often with a polishing cloth, and keep the jewellery away from moisture and sunlight in our pouches or boxes.
While gold will not tarnish, moisture can cause the gold to patina over time. A patina is a darker, somewhat matte colouration on your gold jewellery. A patina does not mean your piece is faulty; in fact, it’s often favoured for the antique look it bestows. Regularly polishing and cleaning will restore your gold piece’s shine.
